Shravana Krishna Pratipada

वीर शासन जयंती

Veer Shasan Jayanti

Marks the first sermon of Mahavira at Rajgir, and with it the beginning of the teaching as the community received it.

Mahavira attained omniscience and then, by the tradition’s own account, did not teach for sixty-six days. The samavasarana — the assembly hall in which a Tirthankara preaches — was raised at Rajgir, but no discourse came, because there was nobody present capable of framing the question that would begin it.

The day that changed is Veer Shasan Jayanti. Indrabhuti Gautama, a Brahmin scholar who had come to argue, became the first ganadhara, and the teaching began. What the Digambara account emphasises is that the shasan — the teaching as an ordered body, with a community around it — starts here rather than at the omniscience: a truth nobody has asked for is not yet a tradition.

It falls on the first day of the dark fortnight of Shravana, and its distance from the omniscience is fixed at sixty-six days, which is one of the tradition’s more precise internal datings.

How it is kept

  • Discourses recount the sixty-six days and the first sermon at Rajgir.
  • Rajgir itself draws pilgrims; the day is also marked by scriptural reading and by processions in Digambara centres.
