The tenth Tirthankara.
The tenth Tirthankara, born at Bhaddilapura. His name means the cooling one, and the story given for it is domestic: his father had been ill with a fever that no treatment reached, and it left him at the touch of his mother while she was carrying the child.
The name-story is the whole of what is distinctive in the record, and it is worth noticing what kind of story it is. Several of these names are explained by something that happened to a parent during the pregnancy rather than by anything the Tirthankara did — the tradition is recording that the significance was recognised before the life began.
His emblem is the shrivatsa, the mark borne on the chest of a great being, which appears on Jina images across both traditions.
This figure is known from tradition; there is no independent historical evidence. That is a statement about the record, not about the tradition.
