The sixth Tirthankara. His name refers to the radiance of a lotus.
The sixth Tirthankara, born at Kaushambi on the Yamuna — an ancient city that also appears in the record as a place where Mahavira kept a rainy season, and one of the few Tirthankara birthplaces that has been excavated.
His name means lotus-radiance, and tradition connects it to his mother’s craving, during pregnancy, for a couch of red lotuses. Images of him are conventionally red for the same reason, which is one of the clearer cases where iconographic convention and name-story hold each other up.
The red lotus is his emblem. Beyond the name and its story the record is thin.
This figure is known from tradition; there is no independent historical evidence. That is a statement about the record, not about the tradition.
