Sumatinatha
The fifth Tirthankara.
The fifth Tirthankara, born at Ayodhya. His name means of right judgement, and the story attached to it is the one detail of his life that has stayed in circulation.
Two women, the account runs, each claimed the same child, and the case came before his mother while she was carrying him. She proposed that the child be divided; the true mother withdrew her claim rather than see it, and so was known. The judgement is credited to the influence of the Tirthankara she carried. Versions of the same test are told in many traditions, which is a reason to treat it as a story about wisdom rather than as a report.
The curlew is his emblem. He attained nirvana at Shikharji, with twenty of the twenty-four.
