The day of forgiveness, following Das Lakshana: forgiveness is asked of every living being and granted to every one. The Digambara counterpart to Samvatsari.
The day after Das Lakshana ends, given entirely to forgiveness. Forgiveness is asked of every living being, not only of people, and it is asked in both directions: uttama kshama is the first of the ten virtues, and Kshamavani is where the ten days are spent.
The formula is Uttam Kshama, and the request is unconditional. It is not offered in exchange for an apology, it does not wait to establish who was at fault, and it is not addressed only to those one has quarrelled with — a version that first sorted the deserving from the undeserving would be a settlement rather than a forgiveness.
This is the Digambara counterpart to Samvatsari. The two fall within a few weeks of each other and do the same work, and in mixed cities the messages tend to cross.
How it is kept
- Forgiveness is asked in person, by letter and increasingly by message, of family, colleagues, rivals and strangers alike.
- Community gatherings are held at which the request is made collectively.
- The day closes the Das Lakshana observance rather than standing on its own.
