Karemi Bhante

The vow spoken to enter samayika, the practice of a fixed period held in equanimity — the text a monastic takes for life and a layperson for the session.

Karemi bhante! Sāmāiyaṃ I undertake, O Bhante, the practice of samayika,
Sāvajjaṃ jogaṃ paccakkhāmi and I renounce activity that causes harm,
Jāva niyamaṃ pajjuvāsāmi for as long as I hold to this vow —
Duvihaṃ tivihenaṃ in two ways, by three means:
Maṇeṇaṃ vāyāe kāeṇaṃ by mind, by speech, and by body —
Na karemi na kāravemi I will not do it, nor cause it to be done.
Tassa bhante! Paḍikkamāmi nindāmi garihāmi appāṇaṃ vosirāmi For that, O Bhante, I turn back from it, I censure it, I denounce it, I set aside the self that did it.

Prakrit, and specifically Svetambara: the Digambara tradition holds its own samayika vow, the Samayika Path, composed in Sanskrit and Hindi verse rather than this text, which is why this entry is marked svetambara rather than both. Verified against independent sources during this session; the segmentation into lines here follows sense-units rather than any single manuscript's own line breaks.
