Abhinandananatha
The fourth Tirthankara.
The fourth Tirthankara, born at Ayodhya, which tradition gives as the birthplace of five of the twenty-four and as the seat of the dynasty Rishabhadeva founded.
The name is read as one who is rejoiced in — abhinandana, felicitation — and tradition attributes it to the celebration that attended his birth, or in some tellings to Indra’s praise of him.
The monkey is his emblem. What survives of him is the sequence, the emblem and the places; the narrative did not.
Tradition preserves the name, the emblem, the places and the position in the sequence for every Tirthankara, but distinctive narrative for only a handful. For this figure there is little beyond what is above — and saying so is more useful than three invented paragraphs. Where a well-sourced account exists that we have missed, we would like to hear about it.
This figure is known from tradition; there is no independent historical evidence. That is a statement about the record, not about the tradition.
