णमोकार मंत्र
Namokar Mantra
The foundational prayer of Jainism. It bows to qualities rather than to any named individual, which is why every tradition shares it.
- णमो अरिहंताणं Ṇamo Arihantāṇaṃ I bow to the Arihants, who have conquered their inner enemies.
- णमो सिद्धाणं Ṇamo Siddhāṇaṃ I bow to the Siddhas, the liberated souls.
- णमो आयरियाणं Ṇamo Āyariyāṇaṃ I bow to the Acharyas, the heads of the ascetic order.
- णमो उवज्झायाणं Ṇamo Uvajjhāyāṇaṃ I bow to the Upadhyayas, the teachers of scripture.
- णमो लोए सव्वसाहूणं Ṇamo Loe Savvasāhūṇaṃ I bow to all ascetics in the world.
- एसो पंच णमोक्कारो Eso Pañca Ṇamokkāro This fivefold obeisance
- सव्वपावप्पणासणो Savva-pāvappaṇāsaṇo destroys all sins,
- मंगलाणं च सव्वेसिं Maṅgalāṇaṃ ca savvesiṃ and of all auspicious things
- पढमं हवइ मंगलं Paḍhamaṃ havai maṅgalaṃ it is the foremost.
Nine lines. The first five are the obeisance proper; the last four are the chulika, the concluding praise. Prakrit, not Sanskrit.
