Kshatriyakund

The site the Svetambara tradition identifies as Mahavira’s birthplace, in Vaishali district — distinct from, and disputed against, the Digambara identification at Kundalpur near Nalanda.

The dispute over Mahavira’s birthplace is not confined to two rival sites, even within Svetambara identification: Kshatriyakund itself is approached through the Lachhuar Jain temple in Jamui district, built in 1857 by Raja Dhanpat Singh Bahadur as what is generally described as the gateway to the site, and separately, a location called Basokund near Vaishali is put forward by some as the more precise birthplace within the same broad district. The layers of identification inside a single tradition’s claim are themselves worth recording, not just the larger Svetambara–Digambara split.

Whichever precise point is meant, the modern temple complex holds an image its custodians date to well over two thousand years old — a black stone Mahavira of some 250 kilograms — and a large dharamshala built to receive pilgrims, evidence of a continuously maintained pilgrimage rather than a site recently revived.
