Palitana Temples

Hundreds of temples along a hilltop reached by a long stone stairway. Among the most significant pilgrimage sites in the tradition.

Not one temple but hundreds, crowded along the ridges of Shatrunjaya hill above the town of Palitana, built and rebuilt from the eleventh century onward.

Shatrunjaya is among the most significant pilgrimage sites in the Svetambara tradition; the hill is held to have been sanctified by Rishabhadeva's presence. Pilgrims climb some three and a half thousand steps, and by custom no one — not even a priest — stays on the hill overnight. At dusk it empties completely.

Worth knowing

• The ascent is long; pilgrims usually begin before dawn to avoid the heat.
• The town below observes a strict vegetarian rule.
