Tirthankara 20 of 24

मुनिसुव्रत

Munisuvratanatha · also Munisuvrata

The twentieth Tirthankara.

The twentieth Tirthankara, and one of two in the sequence said to have belonged to the Harivamsa lineage rather than the Ikshvaku. The tortoise is his emblem.

Tradition associates him with Rajgir in present-day Bihar, and places his life in the same era as the events of the Ramayana — one of several points at which the Jain account of the past runs alongside the Hindu one while telling it differently.

On the name. Digambara sources generally give the fuller Munisuvratanatha.

This figure is known from tradition; there is no independent historical evidence. That is a statement about the record, not about the tradition.
