Vasupujya
The twelfth Tirthankara.
The twelfth Tirthankara, and the only one for whom tradition places all five kalyanakas — conception, birth, renunciation, omniscience and liberation — at a single city. That city is Champapuri in what is now Bhagalpur district, Bihar, which is why it is a pilgrimage site of the first rank despite being much less visited than Shikharji.
He is also recorded as having renounced without ever ruling. Where most Tirthankaras of royal birth are described as reigning and then leaving, the account of Vasupujya has him decline the kingdom outright; both traditions agree that he never married.
The buffalo is his emblem. That his liberation is at Champapuri rather than Shikharji is one of the four exceptions to the pattern, along with Rishabhadeva at Ashtapada, Neminatha at Girnar and Mahavira at Pavapuri.
This figure is known from tradition; there is no independent historical evidence. That is a statement about the record, not about the tradition.
